Stretch beyond self-talk, limiting and excuse words

stretch beyond limiting self talk

How often have you heard or said something like, “Trust me to mess/drop/miss that”; “Everyone knows I stuff that up”; “I just can’t seem to do that” and other such little self put downs?

If we are to become all we can possible be, we have to allow ourselves to be that person. We have to lose our created identity: the one that excuses (and creates) our shortcomings with negative phrases, and makes succeeding dangerous - because who knows, if you do it well, you might have to do it again the next time! And then there is the added dimension of what will our friends think: who will you be to them if you improve - what if you were to be smart and successful?

If you could be anyone or anything - who would you choose to be?

What words would you use to describe the "perfect you"? Maybe the perfect ABC - Able, Bright, Confident, Diligent, Empathetic, Free-willed; Gregarious, Hard-working; Integrity ……

Do you know what is stopping you? YOU.

Do you know what is stopping you? YOU.

What can you do about it? Think, talk & act in ways that will keep you on the path towards being the person, creating the family and/or business you desire.

Take small steps - do one thing each day that stretches you, maybe even scares you. Do some cold calls, a public talk, volunteer for something.

The key with this is to look for what you do well and what you can improve on. Stop looking for what you do ‘wrong’ - that breeds a fear of failure.  Failure is not fatal. When you learn and move ahead wiser then you grow. My mother brought me up on this solid truth:

“ There is no such word as can’t. You can do anything if you try hard enough” - Liz Clark

What could you do today? Maybe the best thing for today is focusing on what youCAN do.

  • Candor - Be honest with yourself and others. Are you using words like “can’t” as a way of avoiding commitment and giving your best? [Yes there are some things you “can’t” do - e.g. 3 things you can’t recover in life, the word after it’s said, the moment after it’s missed, and the time after it’s gone]
  • Ask for help, for accountability, for learning - whatever it will take so that you CAN! Attitude sets altitude - adjust your sights for greatness.
  • Now is the time - Have an action bias. As Roosevelt said ‘do what you can do, with what you have, where you are, right now!’

A “CAN” attitude can change a person, a team, a company - what can you start today?
