How does your thinking affect who you are? How you perceive life? What decisions you make? Obviously your thinking is the key factor in all of these. What was the last challenge you consciously remember wrestling with?
I love quotes, and a few of William James' quotes grabbed my attention many years back: “If you can change your mind, you can change your life.” and "The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes." This has affected my thinking in many areas - even down to choosing my career and company name.
How did you pick the name for your business? A company name says so much and affects everything from brand image through to SEO. Back in 2007 when I decided I was going to start my own business I remember walking around for weeks with a notepad to capture every thought I had in the desperate hope of finding the perfect name.
There is so much to consider - do you pick a name that says what you do - Bank of New Zealand/Auckland Airport? Or one that implies what you do - Air New Zealand/Media Works/The Warehouse? Or go for something totally random - Google/Apple/Uber/Xero? Do you choose founders' names Fisher & Paykel/Hubbard Foods/Knight Group? Maybe by what you supply - Playground Center/Truck Stops? If you have gone through this process, you know that you consider all of these and so much more - maybe location, use a foreign word, product name etc.
“Think Right” ‘appeared’ on my notebook one day and resonated so clearly - it was what I wanted to do, area I wanted to train in and what I wanted the end result of my training to be.
The way we think underpins everything about us as people, families and businesses. You are where you are today because you have followed the thoughts you have had. Are you happy with the path you are on? Are you happy with where you are headed? You can not change your past but you can change the direction of your future today. When we think right, we act right and live right.
René Descartes said “I think therefore I am” but it goes beyond this. What I have found is that many people are unaware how much control they can have on their thoughts - the stories you tell yourself will become the words you speak and these will translate into action giving you the results you deserve.
Want better results? Observe your thinking and analyse what is helpful and what needs to be improved/changed/altered and then do this. Pick little thoughts to tackle and change and do this consistently - small consistent action leads to great results. Read wider, watch mind improving videos, play games, engage it stimulating conversation, go on training courses! Train your mind - remember it is like a muscle and can be trained, stretched and grown.
